NOTE: This is post is by BC. From now on they will come directly from him (this one did, I just screwed something in blogger because, well, I am kinda dumb).
While they were in the majority, one of the things Republicans did well was force Democrats to take tough votes. They consistently put Democrats on record on sticky issues, including partial birth abortion. This helped alot during campaign season.
Now that Democrats control Congress, they have to do the same thing to the GOP. The war resolution is a good start, but there needs to be more. Sadly, a new opportunity has come to light.
I say sadly, becomes the opportunity is borne of tragedy. The St. Petersburg Times has an article about a woman who was put through an ordeal after she reported her rape. One aspect of this fiasco was that she originally denied access to the morning after pill. Let me repeat that - a raped woman was denied the medical treatment she desired (I can't say for sure, but if you applied the old WWJD standard, I don't think denying her treatment would be the answer).
I realize that people have different levels of comfort with the right to choose and the morning after pill, but I believe it is safe to say that sane people would allow a rape victim the right to choose her medical treatment. Of course, the religious right has never been all that sane.
The Democrats need to have a bill that guarantees a woman the right to receive a morning after pill after being sexually assaulted, regardless of where she is being treated. That would force the GOP to choose between the religious right votes they crave and the rights of a rape victim. It's the right thing to do with the added benefit of being a politically deadly vote.

Welcome BC!!!
Go you, BC!
Love the fetus, hate (ignore?) the child.
And putting the Repubs on record is mandatory.
"Forcing them to choose": Hmmmm. Freedom of choice? What a concept.
And you guys are welcom to Saturday Night Losers' Club on Daily Kos. Lots of fun & snark!
Hi BC!
Great post. When I read the story this week about the woman who was denied the morning after pill...and jailed, no less, it made my stomach turn. This is why we can't allow the Republican party to hi-jack our country and turn it into a theocracy.
Our Constitution is for all the people of the US, no matter what their race, religion, or lack of religion. When the Christian faith is being taken over by fundamentalist extremist, like Pat Robertson or James Dobson, it turns many against those who are Christians (like me), and we are branded as loons. We're not all like that!
If a woman chooses to have an abortion, she should be treated with kindness, not condemned. No one should be forced to follow the laws of a faith they don't believe in.
If the GOP is so concerned about abortion, then maybe they shouldn't try so hard to keep people from having a living wage, so they can support the children after they are born. Or maybe they should think about health care for every American so the children that they don't want aborted could have medical coverage. Maybe they should think about giving women equal pay for the same work men do. It also doesn't help when they insist on teaching abstinence only in schools, instead of teaching kids about birth control.
Ok...I'm off on a tangent, sorry. Poor BC, his first day and I went crazy on him.
We need to get these assholes on record and we need to keep the heat on them until election day. If the Democrats don't take advantage of the majority that they have now, they will regret it, and if they don't show me that they are willing to do the job, I'm not so sure I'll knock myself out trying to get their asses re-elected again.
Damn, almost forgot...
(paddy bats eyes)
Hi BC!!!! You mysterious hunk you!!!
You are absolutely correct Mihan. It is worth thinking about. And some people around this site know some folks up on the Hill...A campaign may be in order.
Well said BC. Force 'em into a corner. Let them be the ones to have to publicly endorse their policy in a case like this. Then, let the chips fall!
but if you applied the old WWJD standard, I don't think denying her treatment would be the answer)
I checked the What Would Jenna Drink standard, and you're right BC. The words deny or denying is only used as it relates to confessing to an allegation.
Apparently one can deny things (i.e. alcohol and medications w/o prescriptions are in your possession) but alcohol and prescriptions can not be denied from you. Its in the WWJD entitlement program section.
I'm only guessing that's what you were referring to.
There are not words for how much I love this idea, while loathing the occasion that brings it to light.
Maybe we can get someone to introduce it in the state levels as well. Sometimes that's an easier point to get to...
