Walter Reed Smoking Gun Quote

Here is the Bush Administration when the scandal broke recently:

At the White House, spokesman Tony Snow said he spoke with the president yesterday about Walter Reed and the president told him: "Find out what the problem is and fix it."

He said Bush "first learned of the troubling allegations regarding Walter Reed from the stories this weekend in The Washington Post. He is deeply concerned and wants any problems identified and fixed." (The stories were published Monday and yesterday in the Monitor.)
And here is President Bush December 20, 2004, when defending his then-Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld:

"I know Secretary Rumsfeld's heart; I know how much he cares for the troops," Bush said, adding that Rumsfeld and his wife, Joyce, often visit military patients at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington and the Naval Medical Center in nearby Bethesda, Md.
You got that? Rumsfeld was with the patients, and obviously just didn't notice the crap falling from the ceiling, soiled carpets or multi-legged creatures living among our wounded soldiers.

So either Bush is lying and Rumsfeld wasn't visiting, or he and/or Rumsfeld are heartless whores who didn't care to do anything about this (are they mutually exclusive)?

You choose.

I vote for Bush is lying.

There's a reason why Rumsfeld didn't notice:

Last October, Joyce Rumsfeld, the wife of then-Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, was taken to Walter Reed by a friend concerned about outpatient treatment. She attended a weekly meeting, called Girls Time Out, at which wives, girlfriends and mothers of soldiers exchange stories and offer support.

According to three people who attended the gathering, Rumsfeld listened quietly. Some of the women did not know who she was. At the end of the meeting, Rumsfeld asked one of the staff members whether she thought that the soldiers her husband was meeting on his visits had been handpicked to paint a rosy picture of their time there. The answer was yes.

Unfortunately, Dana Priest never asked if Joyce Rumsfeld told her husband and if she did, why he didn't do anything about it.

I'm gonna have to choose both here Cliff. It is second nature for sociopaths to lie.

It's not either/or. It's both.

Their punishment should be to make them sleep in urine-soaked beds among rats while being exposed to mold spores.

I'm sure that Rumsfeld heard about the bad treatment at Walter Reed Hospital, but chose to ignore it. Especially since they planned on closing the place anyway. I'm sure when he went to visit, he was escorted by the big brass and brought only to the rooms or buildings that were in half-decent shape. He just went along with the charade.
