In this time that our attention is focused on Mrs Edwards health, take a moment to consider those here in the Greatest Nation On Earthâ„¢ who have no insurance.

Then go read this-

UNDERinsured: Have Health Insurance & Still Screwed

Survey data from the Kaiser Foundation in 2002 showed that among persons who were insured:

24% of insured families spent $2,000 or more out-of-pocket expenses on health care.
18% reported postponing seeking care due to costs
15% had problems paying medical bills
10% had needed a prescription filled, but did not get it
8% were contacted by a collection agency about medical bills
6% needed medical care but did not get it.

There are some sobering and astounding statistics in this diary by Daily Kos regular DrSteveB. I have quite a few of his stories bookmarked for my own personal use.

Sen.Ron WydenD Oregon has an excellent bill for universal health care.

The City of San Francisco also has a heath plan for the uninsured authored by Supervisor Tom Ammiano (now a candidate for the State Assembly.)

ps
If you like to have a positive side of bad news...there has been a remarkable demonstration of the depth of people who are planning to support Edwards --haven't declared their support yet but you can see it coming

There are a reported 47 million Americans without health insurance.

Many of these uninsured are employed.

The economy will never be fully right until the U.S does something to insure all its citizens.

At the very least, if the money wasted in Iraq was put into the health care system, every American could be fully insured, with the same insurance that Congress has afforded themselves.

from the comments section at Firedoglake

"I just think that the contrast between how the Edwards have handled her illness and how Newtie kicked his own wife to the curb during her bout with cancer is illustrative. And we ought to illustrate that every chance we get."
