James R. Carroll: "McConnell follows Bush's cue on embattled Gonzales"

In his Sunday column in the Louisville Courier-Journal, James R. Carroll left no doubt that Mitch McConnell will remain George W. Bush's lapdog on the U.S. attorney firing scandal:

"But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is not calling for Gonzales to leave.

"The attorney general serves at the pleasure of the president," he told reporters last week. "And the president's indicated that he has confidence in the attorney general. So for me, that ends it. I think the president ought to be able to have his own attorney general."

And if there was any doubt on how McConnell would use his second vote in the U.S. Senate...Jim Bunning was his normal self:

"Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., told reporters he still supports Gonzales.

"I don't know enough about the situation (involving the U.S. attorneys)"
