The newest winner of The Jim Webb is freshman Representative Carole Shea-Porter of New Hampshire, a solid progressive.
You may recall we give this award to those who in the face of GOP attacks, bravado, or the usual rhetorical bed-wetting, tell 'em where they can stick it.
Our first winner was Elliot Spitzer for saying this:
'I am a fucking steamroller and I'll roll over you or anybody else,' the Democratic governor told Republican Assemblyman James Tedisco in a private conversation last week, the New York Post reported on Wednesday. So let me quote my pal Howie Klein on our newest recipient, as his entire blog is in the Jim Webb tradition (and absolutely worth making a part of your daily reading):
Future GOP prison inmate Fergus Cullen, now the state Republican Chairman, claims Carol's attempt to end the war is undermining U.S. troops--a silly and discredited Rove talking point that has been rejected by the U.S. military. Cullen called the debate to halt the escalation "shameful." Carol hit back the way all Democrats should when they get attacked by these cowardly little fascist twits:
If Fergus Cullen has the courage of his convictions, he should go enlist, because they're having trouble meeting their quota. He's young, he's single and he's healthy. If he needs to know where the recruiters are, call me.Carol Shea-Porter, congratulations, you're our newest recipient of The Jim Webb.
Note to other Democrats: This is how it is done.

A new generation is born. Let's hope they multiply fast.
You and her are about the only Democrats who fight back.
I agree naveen. And merlallen, let's hope it's the beginning of a trend. Let the timid beware.
I think it's more than a trend. More and more Dems are speaking freely, or more freely, and biting back.
The difference is, you're just better at it. ; )
Thanks gottalaff...You do make me blush :)
fighting back is one thing, but Spitzer's words were just belligerent and arrogant.
Arrogant? What an unusual quality for a politician.
Belligerent? Stonewallers of reform rely on polite protestations and insistence on the formalities of political ritual.
Spitzer's words were classic hardball politics. He was announcing that there was indeed a new sherriff in town and scofflaws better pay attn to the business at hand.
That being the business of the people of New York.
Cliff, I see the blurb for the new book but, as I said on crooks and liars, you should really do a compendium of the GOP Crimewave. I don't think the public generally appreciates the breadth of it. You may have it be dismissed as a 'clip job' book but I am sure with some well focused research, you could bring life to it and craft a coherent narrative from what looks like just a bunch of isolated cases of political criminality and pederastry run wild. You know how the people and how the cases are connected and that is really important to put on the record. It's a book well worth writing and you may find a popular imprint like Crown may have an interest in it.
