Trophy wife?

Will Voters Accept Thompson’s Wife?

According to the New York Times, the possible candidacy of Fred Thompson, "the grandfatherly actor and former Republican senator from Tennessee, whose second wife is almost a quarter-century his junior," is raising questions that are "spurring debate in Internet chat rooms, on cable television and on talk radio: Is America ready for a president with a trophy wife?"

"The question may seem sexist, even crass, but serious people -- as well as Mr. Thompson’s supporters -- have been wrestling with the public reaction to Jeri Kehn Thompson, whose youthfulness, permanent tan and bleached blond hair present a contrast to the 64-year-old man who hopes to win the hearts of the conservative core of the Republican party. Will the so-called values voters accept this union?"

Personally, I don't believe in labeling any couple, but when you look at that picture, isn't it just plain icky?

hey, it was her decision, and if they are in love, more power to them.

personally I don't think there should be any attention paid to the spouse of a candidate, because typically the only discussion you get is superficial rather than substantial. Plus, the spouse is not running for office.

the only time such should be questioned is when considering the divorce issue. if the candidate supports tighter controls on divorce and takes a highly appease the nutso-xian base with strong moral appeals, then being in a marriage other than the first is fair game.

What's love got to do with it?

the story going around at the time--iirc--was that Mrs. Fred had set her sights on snagging a 'big fish' and trolled shamelessly with the twins, "law" n' "order," to hook her 'trophy' dude.

Both couples in the pic make a nice pair.

It will just play into the meme about how "manly" Thompson is. Is Democrat of Thompson's age had a much younger wife, the media would talk about how "phoney" it is.

I don't think "value voters" are going to be bothered by this at all. Perhaps a little scandalized by the cleavage (and that HIDEOUS blue dress), but that would be it. May - December marriages are not unusual.

I think they'll be much more interested in the fact that Thompson lobbied for abortion-rights groups.

I'm not sure which one thought they were getting the trophy. Fact is, neither did.

Any coupling of Fred Thompson and anything to do with sexuality is inherently "icky". I'm equally sure what she finds attractive is not his droopy jowls, rubbery spittle-flecked lips, bald pate, slow-acting cancer, or Lurch-like frame, but his slick-Washington-insider-lobbyist bank account. Women find this phony goober and second-rate hick actor hot? Please.
