Sad, sobering op-ed by Andrew Bacevich a vehement anti-war journalist who lost his son in Iraq earlier this month. A total must read, but here is a taste-

What exactly is a father's duty when his son is sent into harm's way?

Among the many ways to answer that question, mine was this one:

As my son was doing his utmost to be a good soldier, I strove to be a good citizen.

Grab a tissue.

Memorial Day For Me:

It is the utmost disgrace for us as a country to be in this awful position where parents of brave children have to sacrifice and feel the way that Mr. Basevich does. It is never any easy thing to outlive your own child due to an accident or illness or even a just war, but to lose a child to a folly of a neo-con porn fantasy cannot be described by us, and barely by his distressed father.

And now that the will of the American people demand that we stop this insanity immediately has been thwarted by the very people that we sweated and fought to elect, and the remaining tools of this administration that we could not throw out cannot or will not grant us an end.

We serve the memory of those who have died in just and unjust wars this weekend and curse the political and media cowards that will create another 1,000 or more Mr. Basevichs' before we light our barbeques again for Memorial Day 2008.
