Amigos, amigos donde estan............
This whole scenario is darkly comical - George was a little late when playing up the conservative American Enterprise Institute for the need for more allied troops in Afghanistan; Canada has been bemoaning the lack of NATO support in Kandahar for weeks.
He's trying to get support after playing allies against each other to cover up use of European airspace for those naughty little kidnapping "terrorist" extraditions we've became so fond of the last few years. Seems the allies have had enough and are looking after their own self interests. Italy and Germany (they're allies, right?) have arrested Americans, many ex-CIA agents, and even the Swiss (ok neutral, but dammit, they better not stop exporting Toblerone) are investigating.
last I checked, they are democracies - I wonder if they'll have any trouble gaining public support for troop increases.....then again, I'm sure a draft here at home could muster up the troop strength
we could always ask our neighbors to the south (who knows, maybe Honduran troops have been the ace up the Administration's sleave these last few years), but we haven't paid much attention to them, except for speaking out against democratically elected leaders we don't like.

Please Please Please don't say draft! I have a 16 year old son that, although he has a few health problems, I think the army would take him anyway, especially since they keep lowering their standards. I don't want him fighting in a trumped up war for Bush or any other president we may end up who thinks it's a good idea to start a war based on lies.
I wouldn't blame our allies one bit for not wanting to send troops to Afghanistan, especially if they have to be under the control of the US military generals. They haven't shown much intelligence in the last 4 or more years, I wouldn't trust them further than i could throw them. If I, as an American, feels this way, I can't even imagine what they think of our competence in leadership.
Don't worry Mary Ellen. Won't ever happen. The minute middle-class GOP supporters have to worry about their sons going abroad, is when the GOP exodus begins (although Iraq has already started it, if the Dems are smart enough to take advantage).
BTW - Great piece Mikey!
Mmm....
Mmmm....Toblerone....

don't worry Mary Ellen, you and your son can sleep soundly. I was trying to be sarcastic - there's
no way there will be a draft here. Dems don't want the war and the Repubs don't want to take responsibility for it (which would come with a draft).
Cliff, did you call me a nice piece? first, you come out about the thongs, and now this!
I guess I should just take your compliment and move on.......
I'm guessing that Mike IS a nice piece, but you didn't hear that from me.
Oh, and your post was good too, Mikey.
I've got twin boys. We've been consciously building valid cases for health issues just in case...but I agree, it's not gonna happen.
No Mike!! He commented ON your nice piece,
which is totally, erm......
I mean he meant....
oh, actually, it could be worse.
Nevermind.
Cliff, did you call me a nice piece? first, you come out about the thongs, and now this!
You guys crack me up! That was funny, Mike!
Thanks for the reassurance on the draft. After living through Viet Nam with a husband who had 53 as his draft number that was hanging over his head until he graduated from College...scary.
Can't we just threaten any other nation that refuses peace with having dubya move there? If you don't stop fighting, we are sending Georgie there with a one way ticket! You can have him. Before you laugh it off, he will have Ann-imal Coultergeist along for the ride! Some things are just not worth fighting for! You have been warned!
