They Once Sat Here: G8 Beach Chair for Sale

BERLIN -- Wanted: bids for an oversized beach chair made to measure for the leaders of the world's eight biggest industrial powers.

Authorities in northeastern Germany, where the Group of Eight summit was held earlier this month, said Friday they are auctioning off the specially made chair in which U.S. President George W. Bush, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and their colleagues posed for a group photo at the Heiligendamm meeting.

The proceeds will go to "A Heart for Children," an organization run by German newspaper Bild daily that has projects to help poor children in Germany and supports other groups abroad.

The blue-and-white "beach basket" is an oversized variation on the traditional high-sided German beach chair, designed to keep out bracing Baltic Sea winds.

Bids can be made through July 9 via e-mail, the paper said.
